Lee's Woodshop - Woodworking Machine and Tool Information
Power Machines, Portable Power Equipment, and Hand Tools are a must for any woodshop. Under each of these three categories is a list of the necessary items required to make the woodshop complete and functional. Also, a paragraph has been included for the each Power Machine, in an attempt help explain its importance, main function, and versatility.

1. PLANER: The purpose of the planer is to smooth stock and plane it to uniform thickness. Incremental adjustments are made each time the lumber is passed through the machine, until the desired thickness is obtained. Planer Safety Rules |

2. JOINTER: The jointer is used primarily for planning the surfaces and edges of stock in order to correct or straighten warped or irregular surfaces. One surface should be jointed smooth and flat before it is placed in the planer. Jointer Safety Rules |

3. CIRCULAR SAW: The circular saw is the most used and versatile machine in the shop. It’s most common use is to rip lumber to various widths. It can also cut angles when used in conjunction with a jig or a miter gauge. In addition, dado blades can be used instead of the saw blade to cut rabbet joints, dado joints, and grooves. The saw blade can also be tilted and the height adjusted to accommodate additional operations. Portable Circular Saw Safety Rules |

4. RADIAL ARM SAW: The main use of a radial arm saw is for crosscutting lumber to various lengths. The arm can be adjusted to various angles, and the blade can be tilted to make miter cuts and bevels. Similar to the circular saw, the radial arm saw can accommodate dado blades. The main difference this saw and the circular saw is that the lumber is held stationary against a fence, while the blade is pulled across the lumber to make the cut. Radial Arm Saw Safety Rules |

5. BAND SAW: The band saw is designed primarily for cutting curved or irregular shapes The smaller the blade width, the smaller the curve it can cut. With the use of a fence, it can be used to make straight cuts or re-saw lumber to various thicknesses. Band Saw Safety Rules |

6. SCROLL SAW: The scroll saw, like the band saw, is used primarily for cutting curved or irregular shapes. Very small width blades can be attached, in order to cut
intricate patterns. An advantage of this machine is that it can make inside cuts without cutting through the stock. Scroll Saw Safety Rules |

7. DRILL PRESS: The drill press is used to drill or bore holes. The table can be adjusted for height or tilted for drilling angles. A depth stop is provided to gauge the depth of drilling operations. Drill Press Safety Rules |

8. MORTISER: The mortiser is used to cut square holes, usually for making mortise & tenon joints. This is accomplished with a square, hollow chisel that has a revolving wood bit inside. The combination drills the wood and chisels the round hole square as the bit and chisel are forced into the wood with a foot press. Mortiser Machine Safety Rules |

9. BELT SANDING MACHINE: Belt sanders come in vertical or horizontal types. The wood is placed on or against a fence and forced into the rotating belt. The table can be tilted to sand beveled shapes. Sanding Machines Safety Rules |

10. DISK SANDER: This machine is used primarily for rough and end grain sanding. It can also be used for limited shaping. The disk sander table can also be tilted. Sanding Machines Safety Rules |

11. SPINDLE SANDER: This sander is designed primarily for use on edges and irregular shapes. The spindles come in various diameters to accommodate all shapes. Sanding Machines Safety Rules |

12. WOOD LATHE: The wood lathe combines the skill of hand-tool work with the power of a machine. The machine rotates the wood stock, while the operator uses various hand held tuning tools to cut the wood the desired shapes. Interior, as well as exterior turnings can be accomplished with a lathe. In addition, sanding and polishing operations can be accomplished with the lathe. Wood Lathe Safety Rules |

13. MITER SAW: This saw can be used to cross cut, but its primary use is to cut angles.
The blade can be adjusted to cut 45 degrees in either direction, and the blade can also be tilted to make compound miter cuts. This saw is very useful for cutting frames, base boards and crown molding. Power Miter Saw Safety Rules |

14. SHAPER: The shaper is used for edge cutting on straight and curved stock, for making decorative edges and moldings. Various cutter shapes can provide a variety of designs. Also, the cutter height and fence can be adjusted to accommodate the edge shape desired. Shaper Safety Rules |

15. HORIZONTAL BORING MACHINE: This machine is useful for boring repetitive size and depth holes. The fence can be adjusted to and angle and the table can be adjusted any height to provide the proper position for the drill bit. Stops can be set to provide for the depth of hole. |

16. METAL GRINDER: This machine is invaluable in a shop for the purpose of sharpening tools, such as: lathe turning tools, chisels, plane irons, screwdrivers, etc. It can also be used to grind the edges and round corners of metal objects. Bench Grinder Safety Rules |

18. AIR COMPRESSOR: An air compressor is used to provide air pressure through a hose to operate various pieces of equipment in a woodshop. It comes with a regulator so that the air pressure can be properly adjusted for the equipment used. Some of the most used portable power equipment used with a compressor to include13: spray guns, nail guns, and wrenches. Air Compressor Safety Rules |
