Shaper Safety Rules for Woodworking and Your Woodshop

  • Make all adjustments while the power is off.
  • It is always safer to install the cutters so that the bottom edge of the stock is shaped. Always tighten the cutters to the spindle securely.
  • Make sure that both fences are perfectly in line with each other.
  • Carefully rotate the spindle by hand to make sure the cutters clear the guards and fences.
  • Always wear eye and ear protection.
  • Allow a minimum of 4" safety margin between your fingers and the cutters when the power is on.
  • Do not stand directly behind the stock being shaped.
  • Turn the power on to determine the direction of the cutters before attempting to shape any stock.
  • Always feed the stock against the cutters.
  • Always feed the entire length of the stock through the cutters before attempting to remove it.
  • Do not attempt to shape stock that has loose knots of other defects.
  • Firmly hold down the stock and feed it into the cutters at a slow, constant speed.
  • Avoid taking deep cuts. First take a shallow cut, and then readjust the fences or the height of the cutter to finish the shape.
  • Use a push stick and a hold down device to shape narrow stock.
  • It is wise to avoid shaping stock less than 10" in length. Refer to your owner's manual for confirmation.
