Router Safety Rules for Woodworking and Your Woodshop

  • Always wear a face shield or safety glasses with side shields.
  • It is recommended to wear ear protection when using a router, because the high pitch of the machine can cause hearing loss.
  • Always unplug the power cord before making adjustments or changing bits.
  • Always securely tighten the bits in the chuck. Also the bit shank should be inserted at least ½ inch into the chuck.
  • Before turning on the power, make sure that the bit is not in contact the wood stock.
  • Hold the router firmly with both hands when feeding it into the stock. A constant medium speed will insure the best and safest results. A speed too slow will cause the bit to heat up and burn the wood. Forcing the router may cause the bit to jam or kick back.
  • Always feed the router against the rotation of the bit.
  • Securely clamp the stock before attempting to cut.
  • After making a cut, wait for the router to completely stop before laying it down.
  • Allow the bit to cool down after use, before attempting to remove it.
  • Never use any bits, drills, mounted abrasives, etc. that are not designed or recommended for use in a router.
