Jointer Safety Rules for Woodworking and Your Woodshop
- Before turning on the jointer, make all adjustments, including adjustment for the depth of cut.
- Maximum cut for jointing edge cuts is 1/8" and 1/16" for face surfaces.
- Feed the lumber so that the jointer knives will cut with the wood grain
- Lumber should be at least 12" long for most jointers. Check your owner's manual to be sure.
- It is best to use only new lumber. Also the lumber should be free of loose knots and other defects.
- Always use a push block when jointing face surfaces
- Use the safety guard at all times. Also feed the lumber through the jointer until the guard returns to its normal position.
- Never stand directly behind the lumber being jointed.
- Never apply pressure with your hands directly over the cutterhead.
- Always turn off the power when you have completed jointing your lumber.
