Question:
Okay, I'm a novice at this wood thing. But, I love doing it every chance I get. I'm have a major problem with measuring and cutting. For example, I'm trying to cut a 2x4 to the length of 64-1/4". Everytime I cut it, it measures to 64". What am I doing wrong?

Answer:
The most common mistake people make when cutting boards to specific lengths is they cut on the wrong side of the line. Follow these steps and you should have better success:

1. Use a tape measure to measure the desired length. Make sure the tape is parallel with the board and not on the diagonal.
2. Use a sharp pencil and place a single mark at the measurement.
3. Use a square and draw a line across the board through the mark.
4. No matter what type of saw you use, be sure to cut to the outside edge of the line. The saw kerf will take up about 1/8". This should be taken out of the waste piece.

Good luck, Lee
